Well, that groundhog who predicted 6 more weeks of winter wasn’t kidding, now was he? Here in south-central PA we have registered about 48 inches of snowfall out of the last 2 storms, and as I type this email, the snow is falling. . . again! It is surely a beautiful winter wonderland out there! But how does this much snow effect us as fruit and vegetable growers? Largely, we are happy with the snow. Although it caused us a mountain of work in clean-up, it also continues to put a very nice protective layer over the soil AND brings our water table up. The down side? Our workers have been unable to get out and do much in the way of pruning for the past week or so. It’s not much fun plodding through 4 feet of snow to get to the next tree that needs pruned! It will mean all hands on deck when we finally start to experience some melting! We are incredibly proud right now to give accolades to our newly named Secretary of Agriculture, Russell C. Redding. It just so happens that Secretary Redding and his family shop regularly at our market. We are constantly suggesting to the Secretary that he consider running for governor – yes, he’s just that great – but for now, we are just incredibly happy to have such a committed, intelligent, caring man at the helm of Pennsylvania’s Department of Agriculture. Congratulations Secretary Redding!
