Why Hollabaugh’s CSA?
- Hollabaugh Bros., Inc. is a three-generation, family-owned and operated fruit and vegetable farm growing on 500 acres of fertile farmland in Upper Adams County, PA outside of Biglerville. We’ve been growing fruits and vegetables since 1955.
- Diversity! Unlike many (most!) other CSA programs, our diverse farm offers a wide mix of fruits and vegetables. The complaint we hear most often from customers who participate in other farms’ CSA programs is that they get week after week of leafy greens – kale, spinach, lettuce, etc. – and they get sick of the same thing all the time. Between our diverse offerings from our farm itself and our partnership with many other local farms, our CSA members can be assured they will never have the chance to get sick of anything.
- A connection to, and behind the scenes look at, a farming family. Weekly emails sent to CSA members share what’s going on at the farm and in the business to take a deeper dive into the challenges, and rewards, of farming in this day and age.
- Recipes and information about each week’s box. Never again will you look in a box and have no clue what vegetable you’re looking at or how you eat it. While we do try to offer exciting and unique produce, we will always tell you what it is, how to eat it, how to store it, and share some delicious recipes you could try.
- A connection to the rest of our store. It’s one-stop shopping!
What’s a CSA, Anyway!?
CSA stands for “Community Supported Agriculture,” and has a range of definitions. Hollabaugh Bros., Inc. offers several seasonal CSA programs throughout the year, where, subscribers get a crate full of in-season fresh fruits, veggies, and other locally produced goods. Why a CSA? They’re good for everyone! They give you, the consumer, better control over your food and its quality and nutritional values. They give us, the farmer, guaranteed support to maintain our farmland, which of course then supports the local economy! It’s a win-win all around. When you buy into a CSA, you buy into the philosophy that you’re accepting the same risks a farmer takes on each season. If a late freeze destroys the crop, you won’t necessarily receive such a bountiful supply of fruits and vegetables in your boxes. On the other hand, if we have a bumper crop, participants will enjoy the bounty of the harvest for the duration of the CSA! It’s like playing “The Game of Life”, farmer style! Because of our diverse farm and many local partnerships, we guarantee you’ll always get something, even if the going does get tough on the farm!
